Ever thought about joining? We have many volunteer opportunities within the CVFC that might be right for you.
Junior Firefighters are members aged 14-18 and are issued the same gear and provided with the same training as our firefighters. However, due to the law, they are not allowed to be placed into dangerous situations (i.e. inside a burning building). These members are valuable at incidents as they are able to provide support to our firefighters.
Interior Firefighters are the most highly trained and have the most in-service requirements. Interior firefighters will attend the public safety training center to attend a Firefighter I course. They are trained and qualified to wear SCBA breathing gear. Interior firefighters are qualified to advance hose lines into burning structures for rescue of trapped or downed occupants and fire knock-down and extinguishment. They are qualified to handle all structural assignments such as structure fires, smoke in a building, gas leaks, Carbon Monoxide incidents, as well as non-structural fires such as vehicle fires, dumpster fires, HAZMAT incidents and all other calls that indicate the need for SCBA. Only active interior firefighters will enter a structure fire. Members cannot enter a burning structure without being certified as a Firefighter I.
Exterior Firefighters are qualified to do everything on the fireground interior firefighters do, except activities where SCBA is needed. At fire scenes they provide services including outside hose work, connecting to a water source such as hydrants or other fire trucks, assist with laddering operations, setting up lights, assisting with tools and equipment and other such duties as deemed appropriate by the chief of department. Exterior firefighters may want to become driver/operators of our apparatus. If you have always thought of being a firefighter but didn’t want to enter a burning building, this is the perfect job for you!
All equipment and training is paid for and provided by the department. Work and family time are very important to us, and for that reason, there is no required hours, you can help out whenever you’re available.
In addition to firefighting, we also need help with administrative and fundraising duties. Work to keep the lights on and the doors open is hard and taxing on volunteer firefighters, and can often deprive them from needed training time, and personal family time. Volunteers are always needed to help out with organizing and operating our numerous fundraising events. We are also in need of people with special skills, such as mechanics, computer experts, electricians, and many more. These special skills are used to help us keep our equipment running with peak performance, and it helps us to avoid the major expenses of hiring outside businesses to handle the work.
Members are at the station every monday night from 7-9 and they would be happy to answer any questions you might have or grab you an application. You may also send us an email to ask questions or inquire about an application. Our email is conestogafire53@gmail.com
